Arad Technologies wins lucractive water metering deal in India

Arad Technologies, a Yokneam, Israel-based wireless water meter manufacturer, and Luxembourg-based meter maker Actaris Metering Systems were jointly awarded a deal to provide 150,000 water meters to the city of Mumbai, India according to Globes.

Citing the Israel Export and International Cooperation Institute, Globes reports that the deal is part of a $128 million project to install 1.2 million water meters in Mumbai, though contracts for the remainder of the project have not been distributed. Arad and Actaris, however, are expected to win the follow-on tenders, because of logistical difficulties in coordinating different meter systems and technologies in a single municipal network.

Arad Technologies—a subsidiary of Tel-Aviv stock exchange listed water measuring technologies manufacturer the Arad Group —specializes in Web-based automatic meter reading technology for municipal water networks, and also has expertise in electric and gas meters. According to Arad Technologies, its products help to reduce operating costs, allow for more accurate measurements, and increase the lifetime of meters for its customers.

According to a report in Reuters, Arad Technologies sold more than $100 million in water meters in 2008 and is developing a fly-by system using small pilotless aircraft to collect data from water maters in real time.

Arad Technologies participated in the tender through the Export Institute and the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Labor's Foreign Trade Administration and Israel NewTech program for promoting the water technology and renewable energy industries.

Arad Technologies president Dan Winter said, "Winning this tender is a breakthrough for us, which opens a new market that is full of opportunities. Arad is in the final stages of two other tenders in India, and in view of the heavy demand, we are considering moving some production there."

Actaris is a subsidiary of Itron (Nasdaq:ITRI), which offers products and services including metering, data collection, and software to utilities worldwide in the energy and water markets

Leviathan Energy to provide clean electricity for India

I just received the following news from Leviathan Energy.

Leviathan Energy Ltd., based in Israel, and Maple Leaf India PVT have signed a letter of intent for a $50 million-plus contract to provide clean electricity for India. The two companies met during a recent India-Israel renewable energy summit organized by Israel’s MATIMOP and India’s GITA for the promotion of science and industry.

The letter of intent covers three points: (1) Leviathan Energy will provide aerodynamic improvement technology for the development of Maple Leaf’s 450 MW wind farm in Kerala, India. The wind farm itself will provide over 900,000 homes with electricity and prevent the emissions of 450,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide from entering the environment. (2) The parties will cooperate on development and implementation of Leviathan’s ocean wave energy technology in the Indian Ocean. (3) The parties will partner to manufacture Leviathan’s Wind Energizer for local use in India.

Raul Goldemann of MATIMOP, director of the India-Israel program, said, “We had a successful trip to India, and found tremendous interest in Israel technology.”

Maple Leaf India PVT is a subsidiary of Maple Leaf Canada, with interests in the fields of energy, communications, lumber and real estate.

Leviathan Energy is a startup company with inventions in large and small wind, wave, tidal, and hydroelectric energy. It is operating an experimental wind park in Rotem Industrial Park in Dimona, and is initiating projects for its hydroelectric and wind turbines. India, Israel to collaborate on cleantech

Industries from India and Israel will collaborate in developing renewable energy technologies, the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) announced in New Delhi last week at the conclusion of a seminar on the subject.

Leading Israeli companies involved in solar power, wind energy and others were in India to exchange views with their Indian counterparts as part of the seminar, organized by the Indian Department of Science and Technology (DST), the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, the Global Innovation and Technology Alliance (GITA), the Israeli Industry Center for R&D (MATIMOP) and the CII.

The seminar was a follow-up to Science and Technology Minister Kapil Sibal's 2005 trip to Israel, when it was decided that the two countries would collaborate in the fields of environmental technology, water management, space technology, biotechnology and nanotechnology.

DST Secretary T. Ramaswami told the seminar that there was great potential for joint research and development in the area of renewable energy technologies.

Israel has now mandated that at least 10 percent of energy must come from renewable sources by 2020, said Raul Goldemann, director, Asia and Pacific international cooperation programme, MATIMOP.

Granite Hacarmel to invest in Indian renewable energy projects

Granite Hacarmel Investments Ltd. has signed an memorandum of understanding (MOU) to participate in the setting up of a company that will invest in renewable energy projects in India. Granite Hacarmel will provide $6 million of the venture's initial investment of at least $20 million.

Granite Hacarmel CEO Ami Sagis told "Globes", "We decided to build on the company's strengths in areas complementary to our regular business, including energy and especially renewable energy. We've accumulated extensive experience in the water and energy industries in Israel."

Sagis added, "In India, there is a severe shortfall between energy needs and energy supply, which creates a great opportunity to enter this market, while utilizing Granite Harcarmel's capabilities."

Granite Hacarmel's cleantech business is carried out through subsidiary GES Global Environmental Solutions Ltd., which focuses on water technologies. GES is a partner in the Palmachim seawater desalination facility. Last week, it was reported that GES planned to increase its holding in UniqKleen Technologies Ltd., a start-up developing technologies for treating industrial effluent with magnets.

According to Sagis, "We'll invest in all renewable energy sectors, from cogeneration, wind farms, and pumped storage hydroelectric power. We think that expanding our holding in this field is the right thing to do worldwide, and in India in particular."

Mekorot to develop water infrastructure in India

Cleantech.com reports that Jain Irrigation Systems of India and Mekorot, the national water company of Israel, today signed an MOU to work together on water projects in India.

The two companies say they plan to explore projects in desalination, water resource management, water supply, municipal water management and/or wastewater treatment and reclamation projects.

Growing urban populations in India have made existing capacities of water treatment, waste water treatment and recycling inadequate. The country has introduced more stringent pollution control, which is rendering many existing technologies obsolete.

Mekorot is a leader in water resources management, desalination, wastewater treatment and effluent reuse, rain enhancement, water quality, water security and water project engineering.

It supplies 80 percent of Israel's drinking water and 70 percent of its entire water supply, operating 3,000 installations across the country.
